Integrative Counselling

Are you looking for support to help alleviate stress and anxiety?

Maybe you're experiencing the pain of a recent loss, struggling with past trauma, or feeling challenged with a relationship. Integrative counselling offers a holistic approach to help you navigate life's difficulties.

"Emma is compassionate, empathic and genuinely cares for her clients.  She combines a number of skills and training allowing her to offer a truly holistic therapy for each person that she works with." (SH)

I work with clients seeking positive change in their lives.

Navigating significant life transitions—for example, someone's death, a relationship breakdown, a change of job or home, a traumatic event, or a life-altering illness—can be tough. Reaching out for support takes courage, but it can be a vital step towards healing. I tailor my approach to each person's unique needs, blending therapeutic modalities to help process grief and alleviate mild to moderate symptoms of reactive depression, stress and anxiety.

What is integrative counselling?

Integrative counselling draws on various therapeutic modalities to find the techniques best suited for each client.

Integrative counsellors recognise that no single approach works for everyone. They consider every person's individuality and circumstances, then blend elements of those different modalities to help each client explore and address their specific challenges.

Thank you for visiting my webpage.

My name is Emma. I am a humanistic integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I believe you are the expert of yourself. I work with empathy and unconditional positive regard for every person I have the privilege to support, drawing inspiration from Carl Rogers' person-centred therapeutic (PCT) approach. I provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore and make sense of your thoughts, feelings, behaviour and emotions.

In addition to PCT I integrate elements from other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and the more body-based therapies of Gestalt and Pesso Boyden system of psychotherapy (PBSP). When appropriate, I incorporate nature and creative writing to support your path to wellbeing.

Did you know 'stress threatens the health of the body or has an adverse effect on its functioning, such as injury, disease or worry'?

(Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary Oxford University Press 2007)

I strive to empower clients through psycho-education, helping them understand how their bodies automatically react to stressors—triggering responses such as fight, flight, freeze or appease. These reactions can manifest as feelings of frustration with others or oneself, a desire to avoid problems, low mood, difficulties concentrating, loss of appetite or overeating, panic attacks, or putting other people's needs ahead of one's own.

I support clients in understanding the connection between their minds and bodies. This knowledge enables them to self-regulate and return to their window of tolerance, equipping them to handle life's external triggers and overwhelming emotions through choice rather than automatic reactions. Finding this inner strength and balance allows clients to live more freely.

Emma's training

In addition to being a PBSP psychotherapist, I hold an advanced level-4 diploma in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, which I gained through Heartwood College of Counselling and Psychotherapy in Dartington, Devon. I also completed a year-long clinical placement with Arc of Axminster, a charity that provides specialist counselling for adults seeking support during times of profound change, trauma, and loss, with a focus on grief and bereavement within a primary care setting.

"Emma has a natural capacity for grounded stillness that greatly enhances the therapeutic alliance with her clients."

(CD, Heartwood's Supervisor Report 2024)

Integrative counselling deepens my interest in the connection between the mind and body. Alongside PBSP techniques and nature-based wellbeing methods, I find that traditional talking therapies are effective for building rapport with clients and supporting their healing journeys.

Central to my practice is the principle of 'do no harm'—non-maleficence—and the commitment to act in the best interest of clients—beneficence. I help normalise behaviours by illustrating how humans interact with the world. For instance, our autonomic nervous system may shut us down to keep us safe (for example depression), or encourage us toward social engagement to maintain connections with the world.

I am dedicated to regular supervision and ongoing professional development to ensure I meet the unique needs of each client I work with.

As a professional counsellor, I adhere to a strict code of ethics guided by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
